Things To Consider When Selecting A DJ

When choosing a DJ for your special day, please remember the old saying “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR”. This applies to the DJ industry as well. Why would you spend more on a veggie platter than on your entertainment? Your guests won’t call you the week after your honeymoon to rave about how tasty your broccoli was, but they will let you know what a great time they had at your reception IF the DJ was great!

Wedding DJ Frequently Asked Questions:

Consider the following items!

  • How long have you been DJ’ing?

I have been DJ’ing since 1985, playing for private parties since 1987.

  • What does Taylored Entertainment charge?

Due to the nature of the business, we are unable to quote a flat fee for all events, and still give you the best service, sound quality, light show or music selection for your party dollar. There are several factors that go into the pricing of an event, please refer to our FEES page. Be AWARE of DJ Companies that charge a FLAT fee for all shows. They could be either just starting out, or only offer “a show in a can,” or non-personalized service.

You should consider your DJ service an insurance policy that ensures that all of the other money you spend will not result in bad memories or a less than enjoyable occasion. You do get what you pay for. Good entertainment is NOT cheap, and cheap entertainment is NOT good!! And yet many people will pay far more for a cake, flowers, or food than they will for the most crucial ingredient at a party – the music.

  • How much of an investment is it for a “Professional DJ?”

For a wedding celebration, you want a seasoned pro.  You should expect a minimum investment of between $15.00 – $20.00 per guest for an experienced, professional DJ. Remember-the entertainment can make or break your event.

  • Do you carry backup equipment?

Your special event could very well be one of the most memorable days of your life. So we must offer you the highest level of dependability. We keep a complement of essential backup equipment on-site at all times for all events.

  • Will the DJ play requests?

I do take requests that don’t go against any of your special wishes for your event and that are appropriate for the particular event.

  • Can we meet?

Absolutely! I will be glad to meet with you. Just to allow you to meet me face to face, sign the Entertainment Agreement, and then again, just prior to your special day to finalize all of your details.

  • Who will be my DJ?

This is THE most common complaint about the DJ industry today. The person you meet turns out NOT to be the person that actually does your show. Often, you are not made aware of this. If you book Taylored Entertainment, you get Olyn D. Taylor as your DJ/Master of Ceremonies/Coordinator/And anything else that you need to make your special day the best it can be! (Unless discussed previously and noted on Entertainment Agreement or illness)

  • When does the DJ call me before the wedding?

I will call you two weeks before of the wedding to arrange a mutually convenient time to go over your music, introductions as well as your order of events. If there is a change after our meeting, simply call and we can make the changes over the phone, fax or email.

  • Do you need a table with skirt?

That is generally the banquet halls responsibility and they are usually more than willing to oblige.  In most cases, we come prepared with our own skirted table, skirted stand and or facade to match your decor and space requirements the best.

  • When should we book a DJ?

Simply put…the sooner the better! Some of the most popular dates can and do book as early as one year in advance. Our suggestion is to be prepared to sign a contract as early as 8-12 months before. Depending on availability some dates remain open until the month before. So if you’re planning an event for next month, it’s worth it to check our availability. If you’re just starting your planning, try to make your final decision as soon as possible to ensure our availability.

  • Will you work with my other wedding professionals?

Most Definitely! I will contact them prior to your wedding to introduce myself (If I don’t already know them) and to offer to send them an order of events that you and I have gone over. We do this so everyone is on the same page.

  • Do we feed the DJ at the Reception?

Generally, the DJ eats prior to the event. This is totally up to you, it by no means is necessary or expected.

  • If I bring music can you play it?

Taylored Entertainment will be happy to play any music you would like. Please make arrangements in advance in a digital format (MP3 or .Wav)   If your only option is CD, please make arrangements in advance. A CD player is available if needed although digital format is always preferred.

  • Do we tip the DJ?

If at the end of the night you feel your DJ has surpassed your expectations and you want to tip him, we would accept it as the utmost compliment.

  • Can the DJ stay longer?

If the banquet hall is in favor of staying, we will be happy to continue for a fee per hour. In most cases, we only book each DJ on one event per day.

  • Do you have a microphone that we can use?

A wireless microphone will be provided for any toasts or special occasions at NO additional charge.  (some DJ want to charge you extra for a wireless mic.  Not Taylored Entertainment!)

  • Do you need a table with skirt?

If you prefer us to use a dressed table we will gladly use one which is generally the banquet halls responsibility and they are usually more than willing to oblige.  We are proud to offer other options such as facades, either with tufted leather or back-lit with a light to match your decor! (New DJ decor coming soon!)
